California: Cottonwood Peak, 6608 ft., Prominence is 2088 ft.
Located in the far north close to the Oregon border and west of the town of Hornbrook.
Drive: On Interstate 5 exit at Henley/Hornbrook and go to the west side of the highway. Take the Bradley-Henley frontage road about 0.1 miles south to a gate on the right (west) side. The unlocked gate will have a sign "Jillson Mine" on it. Pass through this and drive on the fair dirt road which gets steep past the small mine diggings. A high-clearance vehicle is advised. We drove in for 5.2 miles and parked at a switchback that was just inside National Forest land. UTM here is: 531742E, 4637210N, Zone 10, NAD27. Park here.
Hike: Much of the hike is on private land marked as owned by the Fruit Growers Supply Co., but it is open to hiking. From the switchback head south across the road on a jeep track shown on the map. This can be followed for about a mile until it fades out, then follow the ridge passing by a hunter's camp. One can stay to the right and avoid some of the rock piles. The route is 3.4 miles round-trip with 1850 ft. of gain. Only a few hikers do this obscure peak, but John Vitz had been there!
