Tahquitz Peak Lookout is staffed by volunteers during the fire season. This lookout consists of a 14ft. square wooden cab about 10ft. above ground. It was built in 1937. Photo taken May 20, 2022. This lookout is on the National Historic Lookout Register #291.
The lookout is a popular hiking destination from Idyllwild. Take the Devils Slide Trail from Humber Park to Saddle Junction then go right on the trail to the lookout. The route is 4.1 miles with a gain of about 2250ft. There is some discrepancy with the elevation which is shown as 8846ft. on the topo map. My gps showed 8760ft. and the National Lookout Register has 8752 ft. which is closer to my reading. The benchmark datasheet has an erroneous value and isn't of any help. 8846ft. may be too high! |
